Otok Pag, Croatia
Shapherds spend six months on average up in the mountains with their families every year. During this period everything is quiet around them, except the wild bora winds that strike upon the island from the nearby mountains with gusts up to 300 km/h.
This rare phenomenon blew away most of the islands soil from the eastern foothills but also gave one of Europe’s most surreal landscapes.
Shepherds come down from the mountains in every 2 months to buy goods for the times ahead and besides looking after the sheeps and making cheese - the Paški sir - they’ve been building massive stone fences for centuries on the steep, harsh cliffs of the mountains.
